Important Features of Land-Based Industry Sectors

Sector Profiles

  • Each sector is unique in its job roles, required skills, and practice methods.
  • Availability of work can be affected by factors such as seasonality, economic fluctuations, and government regulations.

Sustainability

  • All land-based sectors are increasingly focused on sustainable practices to limit impacts on the environment and preserve resources for future generations.
  • This includes the implementation of conservation measures, resource management strategies, and renewable energy projects.

Health and Safety

Chainsaw maintenance and operation

Chainsaw Maintenance

  • Always ensure your chainsaw is in good condition before operating it.

  • Regularly check the sharpness of the chainsaw's chain and have it sharpened if necessary.

  • Clean chainsaw regularly, ensuring to remove any dust, debris, or lodged wood.

  • Regularly check and tighten the tension of the chain as incorrect chain tension could lead to injury.

  • Always refer to user manual for any specific maintenance probes.

Chainsaw Operation

  • Remember to always maintain a safe working distance from others while operating a chainsaw.

  • Always use the chainsaw with both hands to maintain balance and control.

  • Always wear appropriate safety gear, including a safety helmet, protective clothing and steel-toe boots.

  • If you need to operate the chainsaw above shoulder height, use a safety harness to avoid falling.

  • Always maintain a stable footing when operating a chainsaw.

Cross-cutting and Felling Small Trees

  • Cross-cutting requires precise cuts; ensure your chainsaw is sharp and well maintained before beginning.

  • When felling small trees, cut as low to ground as possible to keep the tree stable.

  • Always have a plan of retreat, in case the tree does not fall as expected.

  • Make sure to clear away any undergrowth or branches that may interfere with the tree's fall path.

  • Never cut through the hinge wood – the uncut strip of wood that is critical in directing the tree's fall. Cutting through it could lead to loss of control over the direction of fall.
