Painting and Drawing: Characteristics of Materials

Composition of Media

  • Oil paint is made by mixing pigment with an oil that dries very slowly. The paint remains workable for some time, allowing for changes, yet produces glossy, vibrant results once dry.
  • Acrylic paint is composed of pigment, binder and water, drying quickly to a water-resistant flexible surface. It allows for a wider range of effects due to this versatility.
  • Watercolour paint uses water soluble pigments, enabling a thin, transparent layer of paint which dries quickly that can create layering or wash effects.
  • Pastels are pigments mixed with a binder, resulting in a dry, stick format that produces bright, soft effects instantly with rapid application and blending capability.
  • Charcoal offers a rich black tone and creates bold, heavy lines or softer, smoky effects, depending on the level of pressure applied.
  • Graphite pencils come in a variety of hardness levels affecting the intensity and depth of line, suitable for detailed line work and shading.

Application and Techniques

  • Layers and glazes can be created using oil paint due to its slow drying time, allowing richness and depth of tone.
  • Wet-on-wet is a technique that works well with both oil and acrylics, blending colours directly on the canvas for an interplay of colour and texture.
  • Stippling and Scumbling techniques allow acrylics to replicate the texture of surfaces.
  • Watercolours are suited for wet-on-dry and dry brush techniques, allowing for gradation of hues and softer effects.
  • Hatching and cross-hatching are techniques used with graphite and charcoal to create shading and tonal effects.

Effect on Visual Properties

  • Oil paints can produce a glossiness and are excellent for rendering depth and luminosity, allowing for a 3D effect.
  • Acrylics can be manipulated to mimic the visual properties of oils and watercolours, from thick, visible strokes to a watercolour-styled wash.
  • Watercolour's translucency is perfect for achieving lightness, airiness, and spontaneity.
  • Pastels can create a texture and vibrant colour difficult to achieve with other mediums.
  • Charcoal, due to its opacity and richness of black, can produce strong contrasts, highlighting the interplay of light and shadow.
  • Graphite pencils provide accuracy and precision, which is excellent for detailed and realistic renderings.

Textiles for Interiors: Techniques such as Mono-Print, Transfer-Relief, Relief-Print

Textiles for Interiors

  • Understand the application of textiles for interiors including their suitability, durability and aesthetic appeal.
  • Familiarise yourself with the different types of interior textiles like draperies, wall hangings, upholstery and soft furnishings.
  • Recognise the influence of trends, fashion and lifecycle on the choice of textiles for interiors.

Mono-Print Techniques

  • Comprehend the underlying principles of mono-printing, a type of printmaking that creates one unique image at a time.
  • Learn how to use various materials and tools such as printing plates, rollers, inks, and paper for mono-printing.
  • Exhibit proficiency in creating direct and transferred mono-prints with intricate designs and patterns.
  • Understand how the application of colour theory and mixing techniques can enhance the outcome of mono-printed textile designs.

Transfer-Relief Techniques

  • Gain understanding of transfer-relief printing techniques, where an image is transferred from one surface to another by means of raised areas.
  • Gain knowledge into the different types of relief printing methods, including woodcut, linocut, wood engraving, and collagraphy.
  • Master the process of using these techniques to produce complex and textured designs on fabric surfaces.
  • Develop a sense of composition and placement to ensure effective utilisation of transfer-relief techniques.

Relief-Print Techniques

  • Understand the basics of relief printing, which involves carving a block of material to create a design to be printed.
  • Learn how to use different tools and materials for relief printing, such as carving tools, lino blocks, inks and a brayer.
  • Demonstrate the ability to create successful relief prints on textiles, capturing detailed designs and patterns.
  • Discover how to employ multiple blocks for multicoloured relief prints, working with careful registration and alignment.

Combining Techniques in Textile Design

  • Show competence in combining mono-print, transfer-relief and relief-print techniques to produce layered and complex textile designs.
  • Explore the endless possibilities of overlapping and juxtaposing prints to create unique, dynamic designs.
  • Display creative use of techniques to echo, contrast or complement interior design elements.
  • Appreciate the impact of using various techniques on same or different textiles and the effect on final outcome.

Portfolio Presentation

  • Exhibit an organised and cohesive portfolio containing a range of techniques and explorations.
  • Showcase your ability to document your design process, starting from inspiration, sketched ideas, experiments with print techniques and the completed textile designs.
  • Effectively communicate your design process, choice of techniques and any adaptations made through written descriptions and design annotations.
  • Demonstrate the artistic presentation of your working methodology, samples, prototypes and final outcomes to reflect your creative journey.
