GCSE Religious Studies A AQA - Buddhism: Key Beliefs: The Dhamma (Dharma), The Buddha and the Four Noble Truths - Key Concepts of Buddhism: Introduction to Dharma (Dhamma) Content Preview
Buddhism: Key Beliefs: The Dhamma (Dharma), The Buddha and the Four Noble Truths
Key Concepts of Buddhism: Introduction to Dharma (Dhamma)
Introduction to Dharma (Dhamma)
- The term Dharma/Dhamma refers to the teachings of the Buddha.
- It is a significant concept in Buddhism and often interpreted as 'ultimate truth' or 'reality'.
- Dharma signifies the cosmic law and order, as well as the teachings which guide Buddhists towards the path of enlightenment.
- Buddhist teachings are considered the path to achieve liberation from suffering and the cycle of rebirth.
The Importance of Dharma in Buddhism
- Dharma incorporates the teachings and doctrines that form the basis of Buddhist beliefs and practices.
- Following the Dharma helps Buddhists move beyond the cycle of suffering (known as samsara), and achieve Nirvana - the ultimate state of enlightenment.
- Living in accordance with Dharma translates to leading a virtuous, righteous life.
- Dharma validates karma, which is based on the understanding that actions have consequences. A good action leads to a positive result in a person's life, and vice versa for bad actions.
Dharma and Other Key Buddhist Teachings
- The Four Noble Truths, the Eightfold Path and the concept of no-self (Anatta) are fundamental components of the Dharma.
- The Four Noble Truths provide the basis for understanding the problem of human suffering and provide a framework for the path towards enlightenment.
- The Eightfold Path is a guide for behaviour, thinking and understanding through which Buddhists strive to free themselves from the cycle of rebirth.
- The understanding of no-self (Anatta) encourages Buddhists to realise the impermanence and changeability of everything, including the ego or self.
- All of these teachings interconnect in the Dharma, and align a Buddhist's thoughts, actions, words, livelihood, efforts, mindfulness and concentration towards the pursuit of liberation.
Question: What is the role of Dharma in helping Buddhists achieve Nirvana and how it relates to other key Buddhist teachings such as the Four Noble Truths and the Eightfold Path?
