Personal and Public Identities

Personal and Public Identities

Personal Identities

  • The concept of personal identity in Germany is multifaceted, being influenced by factors such as regional backgrounds, cultural heritage, religious beliefs, and personal experiences. Understanding these varying perspectives helps in comprehending German society and its complexities.
  • Gender and sexuality are significant aspects of personal identity. Understand the attitudes towards gender roles, LGBT+ rights, and the impact of feminism in German society.
  • Youth culture in Germany varies and is influenced by digital technology, music, fashion, and sport. Discuss the role media plays in shaping young peoples' identity.

Immigration and Integration

  • Immigration has played a key role in shaping Germany's public identity. Read up on the history of migration, particularly Turkish-German migration, and the immigration during and after the Second World War.
  • Analyse the societal and political responses to immigration in Germany and the debate surrounding multiculturalism v. leitkultur (dominant culture)
  • Be able to discuss the challenges of integration and identity in Germany, including the impact of immigration on public services and economy, as well as the societal tensions that may arise as a result.

Political Identities

  • German reunification significantly shaped Germany's national identity. Be familiar with the history of East and West Germany, the fall of the Berlin Wall, and the impact of reunification on society and personal identities.
  • Know the role of the European Union in shaping Germany's political identity, including how the Eurozone crisis and debates over EU migration have influenced public opinions and political discourse in Germany.

Language and Identity

  • The German language shapes both personal and public identities. Understand the importance of dialects or the choice of language in different contexts such as the use of High German v. regional dialects.
  • Understand the impact of Anglicism, use of English words within German language, and the debate surrounding language purity v. language evolution.

Taking the time to comprehend these aspects will equip you to effectively discuss topics related to Personal and Public Identities in a German context.

Word Order in Sentences

Basic Word Order

  • In German, the basic rule is that the verb always comes in the second position in the sentence.

  • The first position is usually taken by the subject. It's important to note that the second position rule applies to the verb and not to the sentence's subject.

Inverted Word Order

  • When the sentence begins with an element other than the subject, such as an adverb or a pronoun, we have inverted word order. The subject still follows the verb in these cases.

  • The verb, therefore, still maintains its second position in a sentence even though the subject has been moved.

Word Order in Subordinate Clauses

  • In subordinate or dependent clauses, the conjugated verb goes at the end. This rule contrasts significantly from English word order.

  • The subordinate clause can be positioned at the beginning, in the middle, or at the end of a sentence.

Multiverb Constructions

  • In sentences with more than one verb, the second verb is positioned at the end of the sentence. In the case of a modal verb construction, the modal verb is second, and the other verb is at the end.

  • If the sentence has a subordinate clause and multiple verbs, the conjugated verb still comes at the end of the clause, preceded by any infinitive or past participle verbs.

Position of Time, Manner and Place Adverbials

  • In German sentences, adverbs or adverbial phrases usually follow the sequence of time, manner, and place (TMP).

  • The adverbial of time answers the question 'when?', the adverbial of manner answers 'how?' and the adverbial of place answers 'where?'

  • In English, the sequence is typically place, manner, time. The TMP rule in German adds to why it can often seem that German sentences are arranged in a different order than English ones.

Negation

  • The negation word 'nicht' usually comes before the element it is negating.

  • If 'nicht' is negating the entire sentence or the verb, it is typically placed at the end of the sentence.

Studying these rules and practicing them in context can drastically improve your understanding and manipulation of German syntax for both written and spoken communication.
