Presentation and Discussion (based on independent research)

Section 1: The Essence of Presentation and Discussion

  • Focus on demonstrating both your language skills and your ability to conduct and present research.
  • Aim to talk about your topic for about 7 minutes. It is always easier when you're discussing an area you're genuinely passionate about.
  • Try to present your topic as an interesting, engaging narrative rather than just a series of facts.
  • Be prepared to answer questions about your topic. These questions are an opportunity to showcase your full understanding of the issue.
  • Spend time prepared by reading widely on your topic, using a range of sources to fully understand different viewpoints.

Section 2: Organisation and Structure

  • Structure your presentation logically, making it easy for your listener to follow.
  • Make sure that each idea flows into the next, using connector words and phrases such as 'however', 'therefore', 'on the other hand', etc.
  • Use a clear introduction to set up your topic and a conclusion to summarise your key points.
  • Keep your sentences and paragraphs concise and clear.

Section 3: Language Proficiency

  • Try to use a range of vocabulary and complex sentence structures.
  • Remember to use the correct tense and gender agreement.
  • Pronounce German words with care and determination, working on your intonations and accents.
  • Aim to speak fluidly and with good pacing, neither too fast nor too slow.

Section 4: Interaction and Discussion

  • Listen attentively to all the questions asked.
  • Respond clearly and ensure you express your points fully.
  • Defend your research and views when necessary, but remember to respect different opinions.
  • Use any feedback received to improve and refine your speaking skills.

The European Union

Key Vocabulary - The European Union

  • Expand your vocabulary: Understand and use a variety of words and phrases related to the European Union, like European Commission, European Parliament, EU member states, and Schengen Area.
  • Use common phrases and idioms: For instance, 'Akteur auf der Weltbühne' (actor on the world stage) referring to the EU as a global entity and 'Kernstaaten der EU' (core EU states).

Understanding EU's Importance

  • Study EU's historical background and formation: Grasp the reasons behind its creation and how it evolved over the years.
  • Comprehend the EU's role: Understand the significance of the EU in maintaining peace, promoting economic growth, and shaping laws and policies in member states.

Reading Comprehension Strategies

  • Identify key points in a text: Particularly when reading articles or news about the EU, look for the main ideas and supporting details.
  • Practice summarising: Write a brief synopsis in your own words after finishing a reading. It boosts your understanding and hones your translation skills.

Listening Comprehension Strategies

  • Get used to different accents: The EU comprises 27 member countries, each with its distinctive accent. Listen to different accents to improve comprehension.
  • Focus on the main message: Don't get discouraged if you miss a few words. Aim to understand the overall message.

Translation Techniques

  • Bear in mind the structure of German language: Grammar plays a crucial role. For instance, in many German sentences, the verb comes at the end, which is different from the English sentence structure.
  • Avoid literal translation: Try to transmit the original idea rather than translating words exactly as they are.

Practise Regularly

  • Immerse yourself in German: Listen to German podcasts on EU topics, read articles and watch news about the EU in German.
  • Use language learning platforms: Utilise them to strengthen your vocabulary and comprehension skills. These platforms offer exercises centred on the topic of the European Union.

Keep Morale High

Language learning requires time and perseverance. Small steps consistently can lead to substantial progress. Keep revising, be patient and remain committed! Always remember, progress over perfection!
