General Techniques

  • Prepare by familiarising yourself with the theme areas outlined in the syllabus and ensure you have a good understanding of the related vocabulary.
  • The key to performing well is to improve your listening skills through regular practice. This can be accomplished by listening to Italian media such as news, podcasts or music.

Comprehension Tips

  • Before the audio is played, go over the questions. Understand what you want to extract from the conversation or monologue.
  • Pay special attention to any important keywords or highlighted words in the question as these are likely to guide you to the answer.
  • Don't panic if you don't understand every word. It's a common misconception that you need to understand everything. Focus on getting a general understanding and listen out for relevant details.
  • Listen for context clues. Other words in a sentence can often give you an idea of what an unfamiliar word means.

During the Test

  • Note down any important words or phrases immediately while they are fresh in your mind. Jotting down notes as you listen can be very helpful.
  • You will have a chance to listen to the audio twice - use this to your advantage. Focus on general comprehension during the first play and specific details during the second.
  • Always be aware of the tense being used - this could alter your response.
  • Remember, it's a foreign language listening test, not an English comprehension exercise. Responses do not have to be perfect English, but the Italian language understanding has to be clear.

Post-Listening Reflection

  • After the audio is done, review your answers quickly.
  • Ensure you have answered all the questions - never leave any blank. It's better to make an educated guess than leave it empty.
  • Finally, stay calm and remember every piece of practice helps. Keep your mind open and your ears alert. The more you listen, the better you will become!

Understanding the Task

  • Sketch out the essential points you should address in your writing task. Familiarise yourself with the content that is required. Keep in mind not just what you know about the topic but also how it applies to the task set.
  • Understand that different tasks will require different styles, registers, and language. Note the tone the question proposes, and match it.

Using Appropriate Language

  • Regardless of the piece, use clear and correct Italian Grammar. The marking criteria for the Italian iGCSE allocates marks for good grammar use.
  • Use a varied vocabulary. The repetition of words may be a sign of a limited vocabulary range.
  • Demonstrate your proficiency in Italian by using idiomatic expressions and colloquial language in the appropriate context.
  • Remember that the language level should reflect your age, as you are simulating being an Italian teenager. Don’t use overly sophisticated or overly simplified language.

Register and Style

  • The register (level of formality) should match the situation and the person you are communicating with – whether it’s a letter to a friend, a trip advisor review, or an essay discussing social issues.
  • When writing informally, it's okay to use contractions and colloquialisms. When writing formally, avoid these and stick to more rigid sentence structure.
  • Use a variety of sentence structures and lengths to enrich your writing and make the text more engaging.
  • Remember the five 'C's of writing: Clear, Concise, Coherent, Correct and Creative. Apply these principles to make your writing stand out.

Revision Techniques

  • Practise, Practise, Practise. Regular writing in Italian, and then getting it checked by someone proficient in Italian, is one of the best ways to improve.
  • Familiarise yourself with a range of Italian texts, from newspapers to novels. This will help you to recognise different language styles and tones used in different situations.
  • Read your work aloud. This will help you to spot any awkward phrasing or errors.
  • Always proofread your work, checking for spelling, grammar, and punctuation errors.
  • Make use of online resources and revision guides for focused preparation. Practising previous years' papers can be particularly beneficial in understanding what to expect.
