Understanding the Numbers 1-20
- Familiarise yourself with how each number from 1 to 20 appears in both written and numerical form.
- Be aware that some numbers can be written in different ways, e.g. '4' could be 'four'.
Writing and Reading Numbers
- Be skilled at writing the numbers 1 to 20 in both numeric and written form.
- Reading numbers is just as important. Practice reading numbers aloud to build this skill.
Ordering and Comparing Numbers
- Learn to order numbers up to 20. This could be in ascending (low to high) or descending (high to low) order.
- Develop your ability to compare numbers. Know which numbers are bigger, smaller or equal to others.
- Be comfortable with terms like 'more than', 'less than', 'equal to', 'greater than' and 'smaller than'.
Practical Techniques
- Practice with numerals, like aligning numbers in groups (e.g., evens, odds), or identifying numbers that are divisible by certain values.
- Use real-world scenarios to put your skills into context. For example, comparing prices or arranging items based on a numerical scale.
- Make use of number line diagrams. These are visual resources that can aid in understanding the order and relation between numbers.
Remember, regular practice is the key to mastering these skills. The knowledge about these foundational numbers will be your stepping stone towards handling more complex numerical tasks.
