Aspects of Hispanic Society: Modern and Traditional Values

  1. Family Structure and Gender Roles: Understand the dynamics of Hispanic family structure, including the importance of extended family networks, strong bonds between parents and children, and traditional gender roles. Recently, there is a growing acceptance of non-traditional family structure and gender roles with single-parent families and a rise in women's participation in the workforce.

  2. Religion: Explore the dominant position of the Catholic Church in Hispanic societies and its influence on their social and cultural norms, values, festivals, rites of passage etc. Note the emerging trends of secularism and diversification of faith as well.

  3. Generational Differences: Focus on the contrasting views towards tradition, authority, and social change among the senior and younger generations. Younger generations tend to lean towards liberal, egalitarian values, while elders might adhere to more traditional, conservative viewpoints.

  4. Diversification of Family Roles: Learn about the diversification of family roles and gender equality. As women enter the workforce and men participate in household responsibilities, the typical "machismo" culture is becoming less prevalent.

  5. Social Change and Tradition: Examine how tradition and modernity coexist in Hispanic societies, with a mixture of deep-rooted customs and new, contemporary ideas.

  6. Same-sex Partnerships: Understand the evolving attitude towards same-sex relationships and marriages. The acceptance of such partnerships is increasing in several Hispanic societies, affecting the traditional understanding of family structures.

  7. Work and Attitudes towards Wealth and Poverty: Analyze the Hispanic work ethic, the importance of steady employment, and attitudes towards wealth and poverty. There is a growing concern about social inequalities and economic disparity in these societies.

  8. Migration and Population Trends: Study the factors driving migration within and from Hispanic societies, its implications on the social fabric, and essential population trends like urbanisation.

  9. Education: Focus on evolving educational trends, with increased emphasis on equal access, quality of education, and the challenges faced by migrant or economically disadvantaged groups.

Each of these domains offers rich discussions on traditional and modern values, their conflict or coexistence, and the societal changes they bring about. In your revision, use real-life examples, case studies, and relevant statistical data to substantiate your understanding.

Verbs

Regular Verbs

  • Regular verbs in Spanish are categorised into three groups depending on their infinitive endings: -ar, -er and -ir.
  • Every regular verb has a fixed pattern of endings in each tense. For example, the present tense endings for -ar verbs are: -o, -as, -a, -amos, -áis, -an.
  • In the preterite tense, -ar verbs endings are: -é, -aste, -ó, -amos, -asteis, -aron and -er and -ir verbs are: -í, -iste, -ió, -imos, -isteis, -ieron.

Irregular Verbs

  • Irregular verbs don't follow the fixed pattern of endings in different tenses. For example, 'ir' (to go), 'ser' (to be), and 'estar' (to be) are prime examples.
  • Some common irregular verbs include: 'tener' (to have), 'hacer' (to do), 'venir' (to come), 'decir' (to say), 'poder' (to be able), 'poner' (to put), 'querer' (to want).
  • Irregular verbs require memorization of their different verb forms as the changes are often not predictable.

Reflexive Verbs

  • Reflexive verbs in Spanish use reflexive pronouns (me, te, se, nos, os, se). They indicate that the subject is performing an action on itself, e.g. 'bañarse' (to bathe oneself).
  • In sentences using reflexive verbs, the reflexive pronoun matches the subject of the sentence. For example, 'Yo me lavo' (I wash myself).
  • Reflexive verbs can also be used to express emotions, such as 'enamorarse' (to fall in love), 'enfadarse' (to get angry).

The Subjunctive Mood

  • The subjunctive is a mood, not a tense, used to express various states of unreality such as doubt, possibility, necessity, and action that has not yet occurred.
  • The present subjunctive is formed by taking the first person singular of the present indicative and changing the ending -o to -e for -ar verbs and to -a for -er and -ir verbs.
  • The imperfect subjunctive is formed by dropping the -ron ending from the third person plural of the preterite and adding specific endings.
