Identifying key points in spoken language

Base Understanding

Develop a sound understanding of basic Spanish vocabulary and grammar. Knowing the core vocabulary and grammatical structure will fundamentally support understanding of spoken Spanish.

Increase exposure to spoken Spanish. Listening to Spanish radio, podcasts, music, or audiobooks can help get used to the pace, rhythm, and accent of the spoken language.

Use available practice materials, such as past tests and audio tracks. Practice as much as possible in order to achieve the best results.

Comprehension Techniques

Utilise active listening. Do not let your mind wander. Concentrate fully on what is being said and make an effort to understand.

Identify key words and phrases. Look out for words that you recognise or that seem important within the context.

Guess the meaning of unknown words or phrases based upon their context. This key skill can help you better understand spoken language.

Catch the general gist, even if you do not understand every single word said. Finding the overall meaning is more important than understanding every detail.

During the Test

Read the questions thoroughly before the audio starts. Look out for key words in the questions, and keep those in mind while listening to the audio.

Use the pauses in the audio to write down your answers. Note significant information when it's fresh in your mind to avoid forgetting details.

Jot down key points or a brief summary while listening to help remember the content. Avoid the trap of writing too much and missing subsequent information.

Review answers if time allows. Checking your answers can help catch mistakes or remember forgotten details.

Stay calm and focused. Maintaining your composure throughout can make a significant difference in your overall performance.

Pronominal verbs: Conjugation and usage

Pronominal Verbs

  • Pronominal verbs are a type of verb in Spanish that include a reflexive pronoun.
  • These verbs often indicate an action being done to oneself, but can also have other uses, changing the meaning of the base verb.

Understanding Reflexive Pronouns

  • Reflexive pronouns match the subject to whom the action is referring. They are: me (I), te (you), se (he, she, it, formal you), nos (we), os (you plural), se (they, you formal plural).
  • Example: Ella se peina. (She is combing her hair)

Pronominal Verb Conjugation

  • When conjugating pronominal verbs, you need to change both the verb and the pronoun to match the subject.
  • For example, if the verb is "lavarse" (to wash oneself), it becomes "yo me lavo", "tú te lavas", "él/ella/usted se lava", "nosotros nos lavamos", "vosotros os laváis", "ellos/ellas/ustedes se lavan".
  • Remember, pronominal verbs are conjugated just like regular verbs, but include the matching reflexive pronoun.

Usage of Pronominal Verbs

  • Pronominal verbs often indicate an action being done to oneself.
  • Example: Yo me visto. (I dress myself)
  • Note that not all pronominal verbs refer to reflexive action. They may also indicate reciprocal actions (actions done to each other) or may change the meaning of the base verb.
  • Example of reciprocal action: Ellos se ven todos los días. (They see each other every day)
  • Example of changing meaning: Ella se fue. (She left, she went away - from the verb "irse")

Pronominal Verbs and Infinitives

  • When pronominal verbs are paired with infinitives or gerunds, the reflexive pronoun can go before the conjugated verb or attach to the end of the infinitive or gerund.
  • Examples: Voy a lavarme OR Me voy a lavar. (I'm going to wash myself)

Remember, it's essential to choose the correct reflexive pronoun and conjugate the verb correctly to match the subject.
