The Contribution Which Physical Activity Makes to Health and Fitness

Importance of Physical Activity

  • Physical activity refers to any bodily movement that expends energy, including walking, running, dancing, swimming, and more.
  • Regular physical activity has been found to have significant positive impacts on both physical and mental health.
  • It plays a key function in maintaining a healthy weight by regulating energy balance, i.e., the relationship between calories consumed and calories expended.
  • Physical activity aids in the control of blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome.
  • It's also beneficial for heart health, as it can help lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol levels, and reduce the risk of cardiovascular diseases.

Contribution to Health

  • Regular physical activity can significantly aid in disease prevention. It can lower the risk of heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and even certain types of cancer.
  • It's beneficial for bone health, as weight-bearing activities promote bone density and strength, reducing the risk of osteoporosis.
  • Physical activity has a positive effect on mental health, reducing the symptoms of depression and anxiety, and promoting better mood and improved sleep.
  • It supports immune function, helping to fight off infections and sickness.

Contribution to Fitness

  • Regular physical activity leads to improved physical fitness, which includes components such as body composition, cardiovascular fitness, flexibility, muscular strength, and endurance.
  • It enhances cardiovascular fitness by strengthening the heart and improving the body's ability to transport and utilising oxygen, known as VO2 max.
  • Physical activity contributes to muscular fitness, promoting muscular strength and endurance, as well as supporting lean muscle mass.
  • It aids in improved flexibility by keeping muscles and joints supple and agile.
  • Regular physical activity can lead to better body composition, reducing body fat percentage, and promoting healthier distribution of body mass.
  • Finally, physical activity has also been found to improve balance and coordination, reducing the risk of falls and enhancing overall movement efficiency.

Inspired Action

  • For optimal health and fitness, it's recommended that individuals engage in a combination of aerobic activities, strength training, and flexibility exercises each week.
  • Aerobic activities such as running, swimming, or cycling should be performed for at least 150 minutes a week at a moderate intensity or 75 minutes a week at a vigorous intensity.
  • Strength training exercises that work all the major muscle groups should be done at least two days per week.
  • Flexibility exercises like stretching or yoga should be incorporated into your workout routine to aid in joint mobility and muscular relaxation.
  • Staying active should be seen as an investment in long-term health and well-being, rather than a quick fix or temporary solution.

Personality

What is Personality

  • Personality refers to an individual’s characteristic patterns of thoughts, feelings, and behaviours. It makes up the psychological qualities that influence an individual’s characteristic behaviour and habits in different situations.
  • It is a result of both genetic make-up (nature) and personal experiences (nurture).

Theories of Personality

  • Trait Theory: This theory postulates that individuals have certain inherent traits that largely govern their behaviour.
    • Traits are consistent and enduring characteristics that exist on a continuum.
    • Examples include introversion-extroversion and neuroticism-stability.
  • Social Learning Theory: This theory suggests that individuals learn behaviours from their environment.
    • Behaviour is learned through observing others, and then modelling the behaviours that are rewarded.

Personality and Sport Performance

  • The relationship between personality traits and athletic performance is complex, and it is argued that certain personality characteristics can either help or hinder athletic performance.
  • Examples may include a naturally extroverted personality thriving in team sports, or an individual with high levels of neuroticism struggling with the pressures of competitive sport.

Instrument to Measure Personality - The Sport Mental Toughness Questionnaire (SMTQ)

  • The SMTQ is commonly used in sport psychology to measure three dimensions of mental toughness:
    • Confidence
    • Constancy
    • Control
  • It is a self-report questionnaire and observes the relation of these traits to sports performance.

Personality Types and Sport Choice

  • Different sports attract different personality types.
    • For instance, highly competitive individuals might be drawn to individual sports where they can display personal achievement.
    • Team sports might appeal to extroverted personalities who thrive on social interaction.

Applying Sport Psychology Interventions

  • Understanding an athlete's personality can help in the application of suitable performance enhancing techniques, like:
    • Goal setting, Positive self-talk, Progressive muscular relaxation and Imagery.
    • For example, an introverted athlete might prefer individual goal-setting, while an extroverted athlete might thrive with team-oriented goals.
