Issues that affect getting involved in the sport
Accessibility of Sports
- Facilities: The quality, availability and distance to sports facilities can significantly influence participation. In areas where facilities are lacking or maintenance is poor, engagement could be low.
- Cost: Expenses associated with sports — including equipment, team or club dues, transportation and possibly coaching — can be prohibitive for some individuals.
- Equipment: Some sports require expensive or specialised equipment, which can be a barrier to participation.
Societal Factors
- Gender: Traditionally, certain sports have been predominantly associated with a particular gender. Efforts are underway to challenge such stereotypes and encourage wide participation across all sports.
- Socioeconomic Factors: Income, education levels and fewer opportunities could lead to less participation. For example, individuals from deprived areas could face economic and accessibility barriers.
- Ethnicity: Discrimination or a lack of representation can discourage people from participating in certain sports.
Health & Disability
- Health Conditions: Health issues or physical limitations may prevent individuals from engaging in vigorous sporting activities.
- Lack of Inclusive Opportunities: There needs to be more initiatives and support for disability sports. Lack of inclusive opportunities makes it challenging for individuals with disabilities to engage in sports.
Psychological Factors
- Lack of Confidence: Fear of judgement or lack of competence can discourage participation.
- Attitudes & Interest: Some people may lack interest in physical exercise or hold negative attitudes towards sports.
Time and Commitment
- Busy Lifestyle: The pressures of work, school or family life could make it difficult to commit to regular sporting activity.
- Prioritisation: People often prioritise other activities over sport, particularly if they don't recognise the health benefits.
External Influences
- Peer Pressure: Negative peer influence can discourage someone from participating in sports, while positive peer influence can do the opposite.
- Media Influence: Publicity, portrayal and visibility of various sports in the media can affect engagement. For example, people can be motivated to take part in sports celebrated or showcased by the media.
