Turkish punctuation and orthographic rules

Turkish Punctuation Rules

  • Understand that Turkish sentences usually end with a period (.), question mark (?), or exclamation mark (!).

  • Unlike English, always place a space before each parenthesis () or ) in Turkish.

  • Notably, there's no comma before the 'and' (ve) when listing items in Turkish.

  • Use comma (,) after introductory phrases, independent clauses and to separate clauses within a sentence.

  • Place a colon (:) before a list or explanation, and a semicolon (;) to separate closely related sentences.

  • Quotation marks " (” ”) are used to direct speech or quote a passage, while single quotes '** (’ ’) are used for a quote within a quote.

Turkish Orthographic Rules

  • Remember Turkish is a phonetic language; each letter corresponds to a specific sound and is always pronounced the same way.

  • Familiarise with the Turkish alphabet; it has 29 letters, same as in English with some exceptions. Letters Q, W, and X are absent but there are 6 additional letters: ğ, ı, ö, ü, ş, and ç.

  • Capitalise the first word of each sentence, proper nouns, and names according to the general rules.

  • Note that in Turkish I (Ben) is not capitalised when used as a personal pronoun in the middle of a sentence.

  • Master the use of vowel harmony and consonant mutation, key elements in spelling and correct pronunciation.

Accents in Turkish

  • Appreciate that Turkish language does not have stress accents on syllables, unlike many other languages.

  • Ensure correct usage of the circumflex accent (â, î, û). It is used to indicate long vowels when it is necessary to avoid ambiguity.

  • Beware! The position of the dot above the i changes when capitalised. Lowercase (i, ı) and Uppercase (İ, I) vary. The lowercase 'i' loses its dot when capitalised and the lowercase 'ı' gains a dot when capitalised.

Proofreading Tips for Turkish

  • Always proofread carefully, paying attention to the specific rules of Turkish punctuation and orthography.

  • Remember to review not only for typos and grammar errors but also for adherence to Turkish spelling conventions and correct use of accent marks.

  • Check for logical flow and clarity of your sentences. Ensure your points are clearly stated and supported by appropriate evidence, in line with the format and style of academic Turkish compositions.
