Personal details, physical and character description

Describing Personal Details

  • Understand how to say and write basic personal details in Turkish. This includes name, age, birthdate and address details.

  • Learn how to describe family status, such as marital status and the number of children or siblings one has.

  • Demonstrate familiarity with expressing occupation and workplace details in Turkish. Be able to identify different job roles and workplaces.

Physical Descriptions

  • Get to grips with vocabularies related to physical appearance, from height and body size to hair and eye colour.

  • Know how to use Turkish adjectives to describe physical features. For instance, how would you describe someone's nose, lips, or eyebrows in Turkish?

  • Familiarise yourself with expressions about physical health. For instance, how to say "I feel sick" or "I am healthy" in Turkish.

Describing Personal Character

  • Comprehend and use adjectives that reference character qualities e.g. brave, shy, honest, loyal, etc.

  • Learn and practice expressions that depict mood and feelings. For instance, how to say "I am happy", "I am sad", or "I am tired" in Turkish.

  • Learn how to talk about personal preferences, like favourite foods, preferred weather, or hobbies.

  • Practice making character comparisons: understand the rules for comparing two or more people or things.

Remember, practice makes perfect! Engage in reading and writing exercises, and don't forget speaking and listening practice as well. Mastering the nuances of how Turkish people communicate about these topics will require practice and immersion into popular cultural content like films, songs, etc. in Turkish.

Future studies, university preferences and apprenticeships

Future Education

  • Familiarise yourself with common expressions related to higher education and careers: Understand common phrases and vocabulary to discuss the next steps after secondary school.

  • Gain knowledge on university life in Turkey: Look into dormitory life, tuition, international exchange programmes or scholarships that universities in Turkey offer. Look at notable university towns and their appeal.

  • Understand the university admission process: This includes the central university entrance exam (ÖSYM), quotas, selection criteria, etc. Consider the different degree levels (associate degree, bachelor's degree, master's degree, PhD) as well.

Choosing the Best Fit

  • Practice expressing preferences: Be able to explain why a certain university or career path appeals to you. Discuss factors such as location, course reputation, and opportunities for personal development.

  • Discuss trade-offs: Understand that preferences often involve compromises. For example, a university may offer a desired course but is located far away from home.

  • Examine university rankings: Look at both global and domestic rankings, but also consider how much weight to give these rankings. It's not just about the best university overall, but the best one for your chosen field.

Apprenticeships and Alternatives

  • Understand apprenticeships: Research the opportunities, benefits and drawbacks of pursuing an apprenticeship instead of (or as well as) university. Familiarise yourself with common apprenticeships in Turkey, such as in construction, service industries, or traditional crafts.

  • Explore alternatives to university: Develop the vocabulary to discuss other options like gap years, vocational training, or starting work right after secondary school. Discuss why someone might choose these alternatives over university.

Remember, discussing something merely at face value is not enough. It's crucial to give your own opinion and reasoning behind it, whether that's regarding university choices or apprenticeships.
