Communicating and Providing Information

Clear and Purposeful Communication

  • Articulate thoughts: Aim to explain ideas clearly and concisely. Your aim should be to be understood by the listener.
  • Constructive dialogue: Build on the information provided by others to form a more rounded view of the topic.
  • Persuasion: Learn to present your arguments convincingly, balancing emotion and fact. Your language choice is important here.

Form and Content

  • Appropriate vocabulary: Choose words and phrases that suit the topic and your audience. Your language should be descriptive but not overly complex.
  • Sequence of Information: Organise your statements logically. Make deliberate choices about what to say first, next and last to guide the listener's understanding.
  • Relevance: Resist the temptation to include irrelevant details. Stay on topic to keep your communication concise and focused.

Reception and Response to Information

  • Active listening: Show that you are listening by nodding, maintaining eye contact, and giving verbal and non-verbal cues.
  • Interpretation: Work on understanding the underlying meaning or implications of the information that is provided to you.
  • Clarification: If you don't understand, don't hesitate to politely ask for further explanation or reiteration.

Feedback and Reflection

  • Taking in feedback: Accept constructive criticism positively. Use it as an opportunity to improve your speaking and listening skills.
  • Self-assessment: After communicating, reflect on how you might improve. Consider both what went well and areas for development.
  • Peer review: Listen to others and provide thoughtful, constructive criticism to aid their development.

Reading and Understanding

Understanding Texts in Welsh

  • Develop your vocabulary; use online resources, textbooks, and dictionary to familiarise yourself with a wide range of Welsh vocabulary.
  • Try translating Welsh texts into English and the other way around to improve your translation skills.
  • Practise reading comprehension with past papers or online resources. Identify the main ideas, supporting details, and implied meanings.
  • Exercise predicting skills; try to predict the content from headings, subheadings or pictures before reading.
  • Understand how context clues are used in Welsh. Words, phrases or sentences surrounding unfamiliar words can help you understand their meanings.
  • Learn how to identify the author's purpose. Is it to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain?

Reading Techniques

  • Learning how to skim and scan for details. Skimming involves quickly looking over information to get a general idea, while scanning involves looking for specific details.
  • Highlight or underline important points and look over them again later to solidify your understanding.
  • Make notes on a separate sheet of paper summarising each section of the text you read.
  • Try to relate what you read to what you already know; this can make remembering and understanding new information easier.

Reading Styles and Genres

  • Identify different styles when reading, such as formal, informal, descriptive, expository, persuasive and narrative.
  • Develop an understanding of various genres in Welsh literature, including novels, short stories, poems, and non-fiction articles.
  • Knowing the cultural context can help you understand a text better; use this knowledge to make sense of idioms, proverbs, and cultural references.
  • Pay attention to the way writers use stylistic devices like metaphors, similes, personification, and onomatopoeia.

Responding to Texts in Welsh

  • Learn how to answer comprehension questions about a text, using evidence from the text to support your ideas.
  • Practice summarising texts, making sure to include the main points and important details.
  • Be aware of and respond to the tone and mood of the text; you may be asked about this in comprehension questions.
  • Develop your critical thinking skills; think about the implications of the text and form opinions about the content.
