- Will: A 36-year-old man living off his father's song royalties, Will is immature with a strong aversion to long-term commitment and responsibilities, until his life intertwines with Marcus'.
- Marcus: A socially awkward 12-year-old, Marcus is constantly bullied and is dealing with his mother's depressive episodes, but his unlikely friendship with Will gradually changes his outlook and helps him learn to confront his problems.
- Minor Characters: These include Fiona, Marcus's depressed mother who struggles with single motherhood; Ellie, a rebellious teenager and friend to Marcus, and Rachel, a single mother who becomes Will's romantic interest, all of whom greatly contribute to the growth and development of the lead characters and storyline.
