Understanding Main Ideas

Engage yourself with a variety of reading materials such as newspapers, magazines, brochures, and online publications in Japanese.
Read the title and scan the text quickly to get a general idea of the topic (gist).
Look for familiar words or phrases that might indicate the theme or main idea.
Understand that the main idea of a text is often expressed in the first and last lines of a paragraph (context clues).
Identify key words and phrases that are often repeated — they are likely connected to the main idea.

Understanding Details

Heavily rely on context and your knowledge of grammar to aid in understanding meaning.
Scrutinise the text for supporting details that give more information about the main idea. This often includes descriptions, examples, and explanations.
When you come across unfamiliar vocabulary, look at the surrounding words or sentences for clues.
Recognise that Japanese sentences often have a different order (Subject-Object-Verb) compared to English (Subject-Verb-Object).
Constantly practise picking out detailed information from texts of differing lengths, as this is a key skill you will need to develop.

Developing Reading Skills
