Understanding Identity and Culture

• Pay close attention to vocabulary related to identity, relationships and culture. These include words related to family members, describing characters and personalities, relationships and different cultural practices.

• Revise various adjectives and adverbs in Urdu that are commonly used to express feelings and emotions related to identity and culture.

• Familiarise yourself with both formal and informal contexts. Culture can be discussed in both settings and you need to be able to understand both.

Contextual Understanding

• Be aware of cultural nuances. Different regions may have specific words and phrases that are unique to them. Learn to identify these.

• Try to grasp the concept of status and hierarchy within relationships in the Urdu culture. Titles and forms of address can vary significantly depending upon the age, gender and status of the person one is talking to.

• Learn phrases and words associated with kinship and friendship. These may be used often when discussing identity.

Interpreting Expressions of Identity and Culture

• Enhance your ability to interpret metaphors and idioms. They are frequently used in Urdu to express culture and identity.

• Develop a good understanding of expressions of respect or affection commonly used in the Urdu culture.

• Be prepared to listen for registers of language. Tone and formality can greatly alter the meaning of a phrase or sentence in Urdu.

Culture-Specific Themes

• Understand terms and themes specifically pertaining to Pakistani and Indian societies as Urdu is mainly spoken in these regions.

• Populate your vocabulary with words that pertain to cultural festivals, traditions, and social norms in Urdu-speaking societies.

• Be mindful of religious references. Urdu is spoken in regions where Islam is predominant, and Islamic terms and phrases may be frequently used.
